Water flow in Saptakoshi is the highest of the year: 40 herdsmen who went to graze their animals were trapped

Sunsari, Aug. 28: The water flow in Saptakoshi River has reached its highest level this year. More than 40 locals who had gone to graze cattle in Garaiya of Sri Lanka Island in Barakhshetra Municipality-6 of Sunsari have been stranded in Koshi as the floods in Saptakoshi changed course in the western region.

The locals have demanded immediate rescue of the people who came to graze cattle in the Thakurwari shift of Barakhshetra, saying that they have lost contact with them due to the floods in Koshi.

It is said that 40 people who went to the herdsmen were stranded in the middle of Sapkoshi after the Saptakoshi changed course in Dudkhola and Garaiya on Monday.

Chief District Officer of Sunsari Umesh Kumar Dhakal and Chief of Armed Police Force No. 4 Gana Sunsari Madhav Prasad Poudel have reached the spot with a rescue team.

It has been reported that Thakurwari was stranded in Koshi among the pastoralists. We are going for rescue, said Armed Police Chief Poudel.

Santosh Chandra Bansi, a local, said that the government has not shown any interest in the safety of the people around Koshi even after the floods in Saptakoshi entered the human settlement. He complained that every year in the months of Asar, Saun and Bhadau, more than 10,000 people have to live in fear of Koshi.

The flow of water in Saptakoshi was measured at 249,600 cusecs per second, said Madhav Prasad Poudel, Chief Superintendent of Armed Police Force, Sunsari. According to him, 34 out of 56 gates of Koshi Barrage have been opened with the increase of Saptakoshi water flow.

India has lit a red light at Koshi Barrage as a sign of danger after high water flow in Saptakoshi.
